It had it's moments
First of all I have to say that I like the concept of playing a game with only two buttons. I'm really lazy, and that works for me. Unfortunately just about everything else about this game sucked.
My biggest concern is the story line. I'm supposed to be going down to retrieve my lost wrench, but every level ends with a trip upward. If you're not going to follow the plot, why add one at all?
Next up, the Jump mechanism. It was painful. Go outside, run full speed, then stop on a dime and wait while I go throw a cup-o-noodles in the microwave and when I get back jump with your full momentum at an angle I decide upon at my leisure. Totally unrealistic. It was like hitting the pause button every time I encountered an obstacle, which is to say, the entire game. Which brings me to the physics of the game. It just didn't feel right to me, and those bubble things just made it worse. I just have to blame the jump mechanics for this though. If you could make it a normal run and jump game and have your speed determine jump angle the game play would be far smoother, and I think the physics would have a better feel to them as well.
My final complaint is the forward progress only theme you've got going on. Several life tokens or w/e you wanna call them were near impossible to get. Without a timer, or some more threatening disaster to run away from there's no reason you can't turn around and hop up and snag a life token. Pretty simple fix here *warning, I'm about to use my imagination* Add a shark that chases you through every level. "OMG I can't turn around or the shark will eat me!" Now there's a reason nothing happens when I hit the left arrow key.
Don't get me wrong now, this game isn't a complete fail. The artwork, for instance, was very good. It's just got something missing. Like a plot that makes sense. I wanted to find that damn wrench, just jump down there and get it, but every time I tried I lost a life and started over. Plus, to top it all off, I got farther away from it every time I completed a level. Maybe someday I'll come back and see if I ever do find the thing, but today I got bored and wandered off.
